First of all, write for yourself. Stop thinking about wanting to write – sit down and start doing it. Even if it’s just one particular scene you have in mind – it could be a description of a place or a person, or maybe a few lines of dialogue. You don’t have to start at the beginning. Once you have something down on paper it will inspire you to write more.

Prima di tutto, devi scrivere per te stesso. Smettila di pensare di voler scrivere, siediti e inizia a farlo. Anche quando hai una solo scena in testa. Potrebbe essere una descrizione di un posto, di una persona, o un paio di righe di un  dialogo. Una volta che avrai iniziato a scrivere qualcosa sulla carta, sarai ispirato a scrivere di più.

What is your writing process?

I start off with a very simple premise. In the case of the Fifty Shades Trilogy my premise was, What would happen if you were attracted to somebody who was into the BDSM lifestyle, when you weren't? I often have a loose timeline to work with, but I don’t feel bound to it – I let the characters dictate what happens. I often listen to music to evoke a mood – I will listen to the same song over and over again when I am lost in a scene. Also, I’m obsessed with the geography – ie where everything is in a particular room, and the choreography of scenes – whose hand goes where when! And I like to have a visual reference for everything.


Comincio con una premessa veramente semplice. Nel caso della trilogia di Cinquanta Sfumature cosa sarebbe successo se eri attratta da qualcuno che era nello stile di BDSM ( Bondage,Disciplina,Sottomissione, Masochismo) quando in realtà non lo eri?  Ho spesso avuto una linea temporale, ma non mi sento legata ad essa- lascio ai personaggi decidere cosa deve accadere.
Ascolto spesso musica per far uscire da me uno stato d'animo- ascolterei la stessa canzone più e più volte quando sono presa da una scena. Inoltre, sono ossessionata dalla geografia- cioè dove tutto in una stanza è particolare e la scenografia delle scene. E mi piace avere un riferimento visivo su tutto.

The Internet! Sometimes I phoned various experts (that I found through the internet), or asked questions on Twitter. And sometimes I devise my own experiments…

Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed were never self-published as these novels. An earlier version of this story began as Twilight fan fiction which was posted on the internet. The trilogy was picked up by an Australian publisher, The Writer’s Coffee Shop, who released them as e-books and print-on-demand paperbacks.

Cinquanta Sfumature di Grigio, Cinquanta Sfumature di Nero e Cinquanta Sfumature di Rosso, non sono mai stati auto-pubblicati. Una precedente storia è iniziata grazie a una fan fiction di Twilight che era stata pubblicata su internet. La trilogia è stata presa da un editore Australiano. Lo scrittore, li ha rilasciati in e-book e libri tascabili.
